November 13th is quickly approaching, so that means many people are getting ready for World Kindness Day! Every year since 1998, on November 13th, people around the world have come together to promote kindness throughout the world. It is something that is observed in many countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Italy. The day is used to show people that acts of kindness, whether large or small, can make a huge impact on the world and our day to day lives. So what does this mean for parents? You’ve come to the right place to find out!
As parents, there are several things that can be done to promote World Kindness Day with your children. Start by explaining to them what it is and why it is so important to participate in the day. Let them know that kindness is something that spreads easily, so even if they just do one or two small acts of kindness, it could change someone’s day and encourage them to do something kind for someone else. When this happens, the acts of kindness just keep going to help more and more people.
This could also be a good time to sit with them and talk about some things they could do on that day so they have some ideas to go off of. Here is a list of some of our favorite acts of kindness:
- Ask a person who looks lonely to play or have lunch with you.
- Help someone who is being bullied.
- Help someone who dropped their books.
- Hold the door for others.
- Let someone have your seat.
- Volunteer somewhere.
- Give as many compliments as possible.
- Write a letter to a soldier.
The ideas are endless and this could be a great time to come up with unique ideas with your child and get them interested in doing something for someone else while making it seem fun at the same time. The truth is, being kind is fun and it helps make you and the person you are being kind to feel better!
Don’t forget to mention that even though it is extra fun to participate in World Kindness Day, this is something that can and should be done all the time! When we talk about and do kind things often, it becomes a way of life, so join in on November 13th for World Kindness Day and encourage everyone in your family to do the same!
