Make a Difference Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of October, on October 28 this year. Make a Difference Day was set up to inspire people to step up, take action, and make a positive difference in their communities, by contributing their time, resources, and skills. You can start in your own backyard (literally and figuratively) because volunteering is all about becoming the change you wish to see. No matter your age or background, you can make an impact on your community.
Q. How does volunteering make a difference?
A. There are numerous ways that volunteering makes a difference:
- Improves skills – Volunteering improves your skills and improves the skills of others. When you share your talent with others, you also act as a mentor, showing others at least one way to do something to improve your community and the lives of those who live in it.
- Bring enjoyment – Your volunteer task may bring beauty and fun events to your community.
- Supports others – Volunteering often helps others to improve their situation. You may make it possible for someone to eat a hot meal, keep a roof over their head or make their home safer.
- Fill a need – Volunteers often step forward when they see a need in the community where they live. It may be collecting school supplies or creating an after-school program for children. https://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-day/national-make-a-difference-day-fourth-saturday-in-october
Here are some examples of how you can make a difference.
1. Be vocal for local – Help those in need.
2. Be a mentor
3. Start a Community Garden
4. Habitat for Humanity
5. Organize a fundraiser (a 5K benefit walk.)
6. Organize a food & clothing drive (Donate to homeless shelters, food banks, or those in need)
7. Run a social media campaign
8. Start a project, or you can find one to join.
9. Helping out an elderly or disabled person for a day. (You can help them run errands, with chores or even clean up their house or yard.)
This national holiday gives people a chance to take a day out of their year to give back to the world. Each effort makes an important difference to our communities, and helps improve the lives of others. The expression of love for each other through support and good ol’ elbow grease is sometimes all we need. People could unite and make a great impact on society through community service by spreading kindness and compassion. Remember, National Make a Difference Day is not limited to a single day, we should extend it throughout the year. We all can help create a better world, one act of kindness at a time.
