Domestic Violence: A Practical Guide for Navigating the Legal System in Arkansas is a book written by attorneys aiming to help domestic violence victims through the criminal, civil and domestic issues within the Arkansas court system that survivors deal with. Two copies of the book have been distributed to every public library in the state of Arkansas and 100 copies to every circuit clerk’s office. Plans are underway to distribute 400 copies to the Arkansas Coalition and 100 copies to every domestic violence shelter.
The handbook explains a survivor’s rights and how to get assistance from the legal system. This handbook provides up-to-date information about the legal system in Arkansas and gives a general explanation of legal rights.
Domestic Violence is the use of power and control within an intimate relationship that threatens person’s well-being. The abuser uses threats or actual physical violence, sexual violence and emotional violence to maintain control over his/her victim.
The handbook will provide you with information on:
- How to determine if you are in an abusive relationship
- How to assess your risk of death
- How to obtain an order of protection
- How to request a restraining order
- How to request a no contact order in a criminal case
- Paternity, custody, and divorce
- Ideas and ways to help you put together a safety plan
- Telephone numbers to call if you need shelter, advocacy services, counseling, and/or a support group
- How to navigate through the criminal system
- Additional resources available to you
