You are in an abusive relationship and want to break free of the violence. How do you do that? What are the first steps? How can you leave safely?
First, you need a Safety Plan BEFORE you leave. A Safety Plan is a guideline for how to walk away from an abusive relationship. It gives you the tools and a plan to leave safely and to be able to start a new life free of abuse. A Safety Plan includes a list of things to start discreetly gathering that you will need when you leave. It includes things such as birth certificates (for you and your children), Social Security cards, money, bank account information, car title, insurance information, school records, divorce or custody papers, tax returns, medications, spare house or car keys, change of clothes for you and your children, etc. The more prepared you are when you leave, the greater the chances that you will be able to start a new life free of abuse.
Second, you need help. Reach out to a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member to help you. Ask them to store your collected items at their house or another safe location. Choose a code word to use to let them know you need help immediately. Have them call 911 if they suspect something is going on.
Third, use your technology safely. Remember that it’s very likely that your phone, computer, email, or other online activities are being monitored by your abuser. Use a ‘safe’ computer – such as a public computer at the library, a friend’s, etc. Clear your search history. Change your passwords and PIN numbers. Create a new email account that your abuser doesn’t know about. Check your cell phone settings.
Forth, you need support. We at The Safe Place are here 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist you.
