December is a crazy month since most everyone is frantically trying to prepare for the holidays at the end of the month. We tend to get wrapped up in buying gifts, getting meals ready, and decorating that sometimes we forget to slow down and remember what else comes in the month of December.
December is National Human Rights month, and it’s great because December is also usually a time where people are most thoughtful and giving. National Human Rights Month is all about standing up for justice, equality, and dignity of all human beings. It is a time where we stand up for all the freedoms and rights that a person is entitled to.
Some of these rights include freedom from discrimination, the freedom to make your own decisions, and the freedom to be in a safe and caring relationship. For this month, it is a great time to set down with your children and talk to them about the importance of treating everyone with kindness, respect, and dignity, no matter the age, race, gender, or social status. Remind them that we are all humans and we all go through different walks of life, but it is always good to be kind to people. We may not always agree with other people, but it is possible to disagree and still be respectful and kind when doing so.
Remind them it is always good to hear people out and get the full story before jumping to any conclusions. It is also very important to remind children that even if you disagree with someone, violence is never the answer and that we should always avoid any physical or mental violence in any way possible. Everyone is entitled to simple human rights, and that starts with discussing things like this at home.
