January is National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention month. Many of us hear about human trafficking on the news or see missing persons’ pictures at the store, but we rarely think that trafficking is going on in our own communities or to someone we might know. The reason is that most of us have a misconception about what human trafficking is and believe the victims only look like the bruised and drugged-up women we see in movies. However, signs of human trafficking can be any of the following:
- Works nonstop and long hours
- High security at house (cameras, alarm system, bars over windows, fencing, etc)
- Abuse from their “supervisor”
- Is unsure of their address
- Is monitored by a friend or family member often
- Shows signs of poor health
- Is in poor mental health (anxiety, depression, paranoid, etc)
If you, or someone you know is being abused, call The Safe Place at 1.888.554.2501
