One of the resources that The Safe Place offers is a support group for domestic violence victims. We provide many different services including The Safe Place Shelter in Conway County, as well as The Safe Place Resource Office in Perry County. We want to help your take your first step to freedom from abuse but we also want to help you continue to step into a life free from future violence. One of the ways that we help with that is to provide a support group for victims of domestic violence. You may be hesitant to show up at a support group – you may be apprehensive about what happens during a support group. Rest easy that we do our best to create a safe, comfortable environment to receive the support you need to walk away, and stay away, from abuse.
So what are some reasons to attend a domestic violence support group? You will find a ‘Safe Place’ to:
- Share your feelings.
There is something very freeing about talking about what you have walked through. Just speaking it out removes some of the power that it holds over you. We provide a ‘Safe Place’ to talk through some of the things that hold you captive.
- Learn things about yourself.
Often, we have lies that we believe about ourselves and our abuser. Seeing our stories reflected in the lives of others that have walked a similar path can help us ‘connect the dots’.
- Learn things about abuse.
We have resources, statistics, studies, and lots of helpful information that comes from years of working with victims of domestic violence. We can help you see the patterns and cycles that have kept you bound.
- Acquire the tools to stop the cycle of abuse in your life and family.
We provide shelter from the storm of abuse while you recover and get back on your feet, but we also provide help obtaining Orders of Protection, access to community services, and so much more!
- Gain access to resources that you may not know about.
So often, victims of domestic violence don’t even know where to start finding help. Many times, the abuser has convinced victims that there is no where to turn to get help except to the abuser.
- Find hope.
Far too often, domestic abuse victims are hopeless – the abuse has drained any sign of hope from their life. But in a support group surrounded by victims that are further along the path than you are, you can find hope and encouragement to keep taking the next step, regardless of how small that step may be.
- Find that you are not alone.
One of the most powerful weapons that an abuser uses against a victim is isolation. They will convince you that you are the only one. They will convince you that no one cares and that no one will help you. But that is a huge lie – one that will quickly be revealed when surrounded by victims of abuse.
These are just a few of the reasons that a support group is an awesome tool to help you in your path to freedom from abuse.
